Michael Ross

About

Michael Ross is a bassist and composer whose playing has been a steady presence on the Florida jazz scene for decades. Originally from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he studied closely with bassists Cecil McBee, Dee Moses, and Jim Miller, influences that helped shape his strong personal sound and open approach to improvisation.

After settling in the Tampa Bay area, Ross led two long-running groups, Liquid Bebop and the Michael Ross Quartet, developing a body of work that blended straight-ahead jazz with funk, world music, and free improvisation. Recordings including Doghouse (2000), Dog Eat Dog (2002), Year of the Dog (2004), Ginger (2014), and Giraffe (2023) document an artist more interested in personality and interaction than stylistic boundaries.

As a sideman, Ross has performed with musicians including Nat Adderley, Jimmie Cobb, Herbie Mann, Nathen Page, and Buster Cooper, appearing in clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout Florida and the southern United States.

In recent years, Ross has developed an especially spontaneous collaboration with vocalist Fred Johnson. Their performances often evolve in real time, mixing audience suggestions, deep repertoire knowledge, and collective improvisation into sets that can move from humor and storytelling to abstraction and swing without warning.

Whether leading his own projects or working as an accompanist, Ross brings a conversational style of playing rooted in listening, risk-taking, and a deep connection to the tradition of jazz.
